JOHN HURLBUT · JORMA KAUKONEN “The River Flows · Volume 1”
Culture Factory. LP, 2021

Here’s a lesson you must learn / You could lose more the you ever hope to find”). (1950 · 2019), “Travelin’” e “The Old Homestead” e la ballad “Someone’s Calling” di John Hurlbut.

Released on the occasion of a Record Day Store, “The River Flows” is the first of two albums recorded during the lock down by John Hurlbut and Jorma Kaukonen and co-produced by Vanessa Kaukonen at the Fur Peace Ranch founded by the American guitarist several years ago .
John Hurlbut, as well as a fine fingerpicker, has a sweet, exciting, lilting, almost whispered voice, ideal for interpreting this repertoire of “standards” and pieces by little-known authors in the company of an old friend, Jorma Kaukonen who he puts all his boundless class and experience at the service of his counterpart, so to speak: he accompanies, never overpowers Hurlbut but indulges him, duets, respects him and however you listen to this beautiful music his guitar is always present, discreet but present. You can breathe and feel an intimate, friendly atmosphere and the setlist consequently acquires a particular flavor compared to the originals, some very famous, others forgotten, others unknown.
Remarkable, I would even say sumptuous, is the re · reading of Roger McGuinn’s song “Ballad of Easy Rider” which develops over ten minutes with a very long dialogue between the guitars before the singing part, a relaxed atmosphere in “Kansas City Southern” (to watch the Kansas City Southern pass on the tracks and dream of big cities) written by Gene Clark · initially published with Doug Dillard in ’69 · splendid inlays and Kaukonen’s solo. One of the brightest gems of this first volume is in my humble opinion Ryland Cooder’s emigration song towards the Promised Land “Across the Borderline” (“Here’s a lesson you must learn / You could lose more the you ever hope to find“). Also worth mentioning are two songs by the unknown songwriter at least in Italy Spencer Bohren from Casper, Wy. (1950 · 2019), “Travelin‘” and “The Old Homestead” and the ballad “Someone’s Calling” by John Hurlbut.
The compact disc version, which contains the two volumes, is enriched by eight unreleased songs recorded live on May 1, 2021 at the same FPR as part of the “Quarantine Concerts”, a “remote live series” that started on April 4, ’20.
