VARIOUS ARTISTS “Canterburied Sounds Volume 2”

Questo è il secondo volume che segue (https://ildiapasonblog.wordpress.com/2022/11/21/various-artists-canterburied-sounds-volume-1/) della serie “Canterburied Sound” pubblicata nel 1988 dall’inglese Voiceprint, una serie di registrazioni conservate da Brian Hopper e tutte contraddistinte dalle copertine disegnate da Leslie “papà Hopper”.

Come per gli altri volumi, le registrazioni non sono professionali, si tratta di demo tape e reharsal che Brian Hopper ha fortunatamente registrato · con un registratore nastri · e conservato: risalgono per lo più tra il 1962 ed 1970 ma alcune non riportano le date: detto questo tra le undici tracce ci sono delle preziose chicche come quelle che vedono protagonisti Robert Wyatt, ovvero una versione di “Instant Pussy” per la BBC, un frammento · purtroppo · di un’improvvisazione alla batteria ed una notevole “Love Song for Cello” (1963 · 1964) dove il batterista su diverse tracce suona il violoncello pizzicato e con l’archetto, la batteria e si produce nei suoi facilmente identificabili vocalizzi. Interessanti anche il brano di Mike Ratledge “Esther Nose’Job“, brano presente sul secondo disco dei S. M. e qui in una lunga versione demo risalente al gennaio 1969 e due brani dei Caravan (Sinclair · Sinclair · Hastings · Coughlan), ossia “As I Feel I Die” e la lunga “Where But For Caravan“, registrati sempre nel 1969 con la seconda, scritta da Brian Hopper e Pye Hastings, adattamento di una precedente composizione di Hopper. Infine non posso non citare, sempre a proposito dei Caravan, il brano che pre questo secondo volume, “Carazobe“, una session live con i Caravan e gli Zobe (Brian Hopper, Dave Lawrence, Frank Larner, Gordon Larner, Bob Gilleson  e John Larner) durante un concerto del gennaio 1970 che vedeva protagonisti entrambi i gruppi.

Qualcuno probabilmente osserverà che questa serie di CD è solo per i “completisti” ma in realtà è ascoltando queste registrazioni che può comprendere in modo più completo le diverse sfaccettature musicali nate e sviluppatesi in quello che i più definiscono in modo forse semplicistico il “Canterbury Sound”.

Nel 2013 sempre la Voiceprint pubblicò i 4 CD in un cofanetto.

This is the second volume following (https://ildiapasonblog.wordpress.com/2022/11/21/various-artists-canterburied-sounds-volume-1/) of the “Canterburied Sound” series published in 1988 by the English Voiceprint , a series of recordings preserved by Brian Hopper and all bearing covers designed by Leslie Hopper, Hugh and Brian’s father.

As for the other volumes, the recordings are not professional, they are demo tapes and reharsals that Brian Hopper has fortunately recorded · with a tape recorder · and preserved: they date mostly between 1962 and 1970 but some are not dated: having said that among the eleven tracks there are some precious gems such as those starring Robert Wyatt, or a version of “Instant Pussy” for the BBC, a fragment · unfortunately · of a drum improvisation and a remarkable “Love Song for Cello ” (1963 · 1964) where the drummer on several tracks plays the cello pizzicato and with the bow, the drums and produces his easily identifiable vocals. Also interesting are Mike Ratledge’s song “Esther Nose’Job”, a song featured on S.M.’s second album and here in a long demo version dating back to January 1969 and two songs by Caravan (Sinclair · Sinclair · Hastings · Coughlan), “As I Feel I Die” and the long “Where But For Caravan”, also recorded in 1969 with the second, written by Brian Hopper and Pye Hastings, theat is an adaptation of a previous composition by Hopper. Finally, always with regard to Caravan, I cannot fail to mention the song that precedes this second volume, “Carazobe”, a live session with Caravan and Zobe (Brian Hopper, Dave Lawrence, Frank Larner, Gordon Larner, Bob Gilleson and John Larner) during a January 1970 concert featuring both groups.

Someone will probably observe that this series of CDs is only for the “completists” but in reality it is by listening to these recordings that one can more fully understand the different musical facets born and developed in what most define in a perhaps simplistic way the “Canterbury Sound “.

In 2013, Voiceprint released the 4 CDs in a box set.
